SANGAMON CO., IL – One man and one woman died Saturday in a wrong-way collision along the highway in northwest Sangamon County.
The accident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. on IL-97 just west of Farmington Cemetery Road. This is just northwest of Springfield.
Police say that for unknown reasons, an eastbound vehicle entered the westbound side of the highway and collided head-on with a westbound vehicle.
One driver died at the scene. Authorities have not released his name but say that he was 63-years-old.
The other driver died after transport to an area hospital. Authorities identified her as a 43-year-old woman.
A full investigation is underway.
