WGN TV said the collision happened on 143rd Street and Kings Road at approximately 5:25 pm. A Nissan SUV crashed into a Lincoln SUV. Shortly after, the Nissan SUV slammed into a Hyundai, which caused the engine to burst in flames.
According to the Will County’s Sheriff’s Office, Chris Haramija, 37, of Joliet, was the Nissan SUV driver traveling west when his car swerved into on-coming traffic.
The Lincoln SUV driver was a 55-year-old male whose name was not released. He refused medical treatment on-site.
The Nissan SUV driver, a 49-year-old woman of Orland Park, was traveling with two family members: a 77-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman.
The Nissan driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital. The 77-year-old man was a passenger transported to the hospital where he died. The 73-year-old woman, who sat in the back seat, was killed at the scene.
Haramija traveled with a front seat passenger and a rear seat passenger. The front-seat passenger, a 41-year-old male, suffered life-threatening injuries and was in critical condition. The rear seat passenger, a 33-year-old male, had multiple injuries and was treated for minor injuries at a hospital.
Officials said Haramija was hospitalized with several injuries. Authorities cited him for failure to reduce speed amid an accident, driving with open alcohol, and improper lane usage.
